Why Rest Is Not a Reward

Somewhere along the way, most of us learned that rest is what you get once everything else is finished. Finish the list, then rest. Earn it. Deserve it. And because the list is never finished, the rest never comes.

A different picture

Scripture paints rest differently. On the seventh day God rested, not because He was tired, but to make rest holy. He makes me lie down, the psalm says. Not He waits for me to collapse. He leads me. Rest is not the reward at the end of striving. It is a place He walks you into.

That is what a retreat is for. Not another thing to achieve, but permission to stop achieving long enough to hear Him.

Coming away

When you come away to the mountains, the noise thins out. The urgent things turn out to be less urgent than they seemed. And in the quiet, the voice you have been too busy to hear finally has room to speak.

You don't have to earn the pause. You just have to take it.
